Moving Beyond Tired Clichés: Ethical, Diverse, and Responsible Marketing for Your Business
We’ve seen it all before – the same stock photos exoticizing places (usually developing countries), the lazy representations of “the locals” in traditional garb, the clichéd aspirational/inspirational quotes. It’s tired, it’s boring, and even worse, some of this stuff is straight up problematic. As marketers and as influencers, we can do better and it’s time that we do.

From the images we use to promote destinations to how we write about people and places so seemingly different from where we call “home”, we have an opportunity (and a responsibility!) to represent our host communities with dignity and respect, to bridge cultures, and create the potential for empathy. Seem like a lot to take on? Well, no one said our work would be easy!

Get ready to work collaboratively with other WITS attendees in this interactive workshop! We’re about to take a deep dive into how we can level up our marketing collateral and ensure that what we’re putting out there is ethical, diverse, and simply more compelling. We’ll examine specific case studies of responsible marketing and get to know some best practices. Most importantly, we’ll arm ourselves with the tools to apply these lessons back at work and in all our marketing promotions!

Key takeaways:
  • Unpack the power dynamics in the images and language we use to market and sell destinations and experiences. Understand why this matters.
  • Cut the lip service! Walk the walk on diversity and representation.
  • Harness our power as marketers to promote ethical stories about the places we go and the people we meet along the way!
  • Level up your marketing collateral and make it ethical! Take an ethical toolkit full of actionable steps to create more compelling videos, write unique and nuanced copy, and take powerful photos.

Doing the Most Good Before, During, and After Your Travels
As influential travelers, how can you be sure your travel is doing the most good and least harm possible, and how can you best communicate 'good' travel to your audience? It can be hard to know what impact our jet-setting has and how much money is actually going into the local economy vs. how much escapes back into other parts of the tourism industry. It’s also difficult to discern which organizations you can connect with are actually helping vs. those that (while likely well-intentioned) are actually hurting people or the environment in the areas they are trying to serve. In this session, we'll look at how to do the most good and least harm before, during, and after your travels, how to find responsible and sustainable ways to see the world, and how influencers can give back to places and communities that have enriched their lives. Gain the knowledge and skills you need to influence your audience to make better travel decisions, act as voices for sustainable travel, and join the movement to make travel 'good'.

What you can expect to learn:
  • What does it mean to do "good" while traveling, and how can you communicate this to your audience?
  • What are some areas of the tourism industry we should be looking critically at?
  • What are some of the red flags to look out for?
  • How can you give back in meaningful ways, particually as an influencer?
  • How can infuencers act as voices for sustainable travel?

The Importance of Tapping Into Diverse Markets Utilizing Social Media & Travel Influencers
For a demographic that had a consumer buying power of $55B at the end of 2016 in travel alone, there still seems to be a huge gap and disparity with the representation of Black Influencers in the travel industry. A majority of Black American travel is highly concentrated in Mexico, the Caribbean, and cruises, leaving a huge opportunity for DMOs, tourism boards, and major brands to tap into a demographic who are heavy consumers of experiences. This session is designed for brands and travel industry professionals who desire to expand their reach and awareness to other demographics but would like to gain more insights, understanding, and tolerance about this demographic.

PANEL: Working with a CVB After Your Trip to Develop a Long-Term Relationship
So you've secured a trip to cover a destination, but how do you dive deeper in your relationship with the tourism board or Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB)? This panel will cover what influencers can do to keep the relationship going, the best ways to stay in touch, and how to be considered for future opportunities.

Tourism boards and CVBs are also always looking for freelancers to create content for them such as visitors guides, blog posts, and more -- but it is often up to you to move the conversation forward. This session will give you insight into what CVBs are looking for in establishing long-term relationships, measuring success, and developing a team of freelancers, and how that will add more clout for your business as a travel writer, as well as lead to additional income for your business.

What you can expect to learn:
  • What are some different options for working with a CVB/tourism board after a press trip?
  • How can you nurture your ongoing relationship with a CVB?
  • What are CVBs and tourism boards looking for when working with influencers?
  • How can creating content for a CVB help your brand image?

Power Networking
If you’re looking for a great way to meet brands, you’re going to love our revamped two hours of Power Networking on Saturday afternoon. We have an incredible lineup of brands coming to WITS '18 to meet with you! Now, you can get the wheels in motion to set up those 1-on-1 meetings. Our networking event works in two ways: through pre-scheduled 1-on-1 meetings, and through group meetings.

Pre-Scheduled 1-on-1 Meetings via TravTrade

Once you register for WITS, you’ll receive an email from TravTrade, our networking and scheduling platform, with all of your login information. The welcome email will have some tips on how you can update your profile and start getting connected with the WITS network. If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the TravTrade team via email at wits@travtrade.com or call +1 212-808-0811.

Here’s what to do once you receive your invitation:
  1. Update your profile as soon as possible. This is going to help sponsors learn who you are, what your niche is, who your audience is, and why they should request to meet with you.
  2. When your profile is set up, go ahead and start browsing through our list of sponsors. We recommend doing some good research to make sure you know which brands you want to meet with.
  3. About a month before the conference, you can start to request meetings with sponsors! (Note: you will not be able to request meetings until this feature is open. Please wait for this announcement.)
>>> Click here to watch a tutorial on how to set up your profile and request meetings with sponsors.

How does the meeting selection work?
  • There are 10 time blocks to meet with sponsors. You’ll be able to select up to 20 preferred brands to meet with until the Wednesday before WITS (May 2nd). You’ll do this all on TravTrade.
  • On Wednesday, May 2, we will be running an automated preference matching tool to match you with the sponsors who also wanted to meet with you. You will get a confirmation notification when you are matched with a sponsor.
  • After that, sponsors will be able to manually schedule meetings until the Saturday of WITS (May 5th), so be sure to keep checking back to your profile!
If you are interested in meeting with someone but not sure you’d like a 1-on-1 or don’t get matched, don’t worry! We have something for you, too: group meetings (see below).

Group Meetings

While a small portion of our attendee base will be in 1-on-1 meetings during the Power Networking session, there will undoubtedly be moments when you aren’t meeting with anyone and would like to learn about a sponsor in a small group session.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What are Group Meetings?
If you're interested in meeting with a sponsor during our Saturday afternoon Power Networking session from 4:30 to 6:30pm but aren't ready to commit to a 1:1 or haven't been matched in TravTrade, Group Meetings are for you. Our mini group sessions will take place in the main ballroom of the conference. They will be 10-minute meetings with a brand rep who will talk about their company or organization, the types of bloggers they work with, and more. You can then use the information you gain from that meeting to approach them later (or even after WITS).

How do I sign up for Group Meetings?
It's easy: Click here to see who's participating and to sign up!

Are there any restrictions on signing up?
Yes! Any WITS '18 attendee is welcome to sign up for any Group Meeting. However, you cannot sign up for two meetings that happen at the same time (i.e. are during the same block). Additionally, this signup form will close at 12pm (noon) ET on Saturday, May 5th. Make sure you sign up before then!

What about 1:1 meetings?
If you're on TravTrade* and requested to meet one on one with a sponsor that also requested to meet with you, you will have received an appointment time slot yesterday. From now until May 2nd, you may still go into TravTrade and request meetings with sponsors, which they will be able to manually accept or decline. These will take place at the same time as Group Meetings during our Power Networking session, so just make sure you don't sign up for a Group Meeting during a time when you have a 1:1 already scheduled!

*I'm still missing my TravTrade login information!
If you have not received your TravTrade login information, please email wits@travtrade.com.

Going to both 1-on-1 appointments and mini group sessions?

It’s up to you to keep track of your networking appointments. If you prefer paper, go ahead and print out this schedule tool to stay organized.

Making A Brand Swipe Right: Getting the Relationships You Deserve With the Companies You Want
Selling yourself to a brand -- and then selecting the right brands for YOU -- is an important part of the partnership process, not unlike the world of online dating. Join Jenny Guy from Mediavine for a step-by-step guide on how to set yourself apart with brands, told as a tongue-in-cheek metaphor for Tinder. We'll look at the specific elements brands are looking for, how to solicit and implement honest and constructive site feedback, which brands to target for relationships, and how to construct an informed pitch that will stand out to brand representatives. Finally, we’ll close with tips and pet peeves gathered from years of experience working on influencer campaigns, speaking at conferences and on panels, and gathering feedback from other marketers.

What you can expect to learn:
  • What are brands looking for in a partnership?
  • What should you be looking for in a brand?
  • How to solicit and implement constructive site feedback.
  • How to construct an informed pitch that stands out.
  • What NOT to do once a partnership is formed.

Navigating the Pricing and Pay Gap for Multicultural Influencers (and How Mainstream Influencers Can Help)
It's the elephant in the room... The issue of pricing and pay rates in the blogger and influencer marketing space is a tricky one. Why do influencers who seem similarly positioned receive different pay and command different rates for the same campaign? Is it truly a matter of them being better negotiators or is there something else at play? The truth is, there are some unique nuances that can factor in to the campaign dynamics, especially when it comes to multicultural influencers. In this working session, influencer marketing leader, Stacey Ferguson, will share behind-the-scenes considerations for multicultural bloggers and influencers as they relate to marketing campaigns and sponsorships, and how all influencers can help us change the game.

How to Swiftly Build a Business That Supports You Financially From Your Blog – TODAY
In today's day and age, countless blogs come and go -- most often because the owner uses the blog as a springboard to something else, or things go the other direction. The blog and community are fun, but the author can't find a way out of the hobby zone to make the blog pay for the time put in. Today, your blog can allow you to become a well-paid influencer or hone your writing skills before you transition into the also well-paid world of content marketing, but scaling your established blog base is actually easier than ever.

In this session, learn about case studies from within the travel blogging industry and beyond to highlight tested and proven tracks for making the transition from meh to major blog business income. By pulling together tactics from other blog business verticals that are way ahead of the travel blogosphere, this talk will leave you, no matter how long you have or haven't been in the game, with new strategies.

What you can expect to learn:
  • What are some ways you could morph your blog into a different kind of business?
  • How do you leverage the community you built through your blog and develop brand loyalty?
  • When do you know the time is right to make the leap?
  • What are some areas former bloggers are making money in today?
  • How can you use a blog to boost your business?

When Travel Is Too Much: How Influencers Can Help Combat Overtourism
Overtourism hit its peak last summer, when local residents in European cities like Barcelona, Dubrovnik, and Venice, voiced their displeasure at the toll tourism was taking on their hometowns using spray paint, signs, and protests. There are so many ways to be a responsible traveller, and in this session, we’ll focus on what action you can take to be responsible traveller that gives back to the local economy, promotes small business, empowers disadvantaged communities, and leaves a place better than it was when you arrived.

What you can expect to learn:
  • What causes overtourism and where are the world’s most affected areas?
  • What are the indicators of overtourism and how can influencers highlight the trend to their followers?
  • What are the best ways to combat overtourism and promote responsible travel?

Closing Session + Keynote: #MeToo, #TimesUp, What’s Next? How Travel Influencers Can Lead the Global Sexual Harassment & Assault Conversation
Let’s gather one final time to examine some lessons learned, hear from our final keynote panel, and discuss how to move forward as empowered, professional women. You won’t want to miss this.

Our society is at such a pivotal moment for women, as stories of sexual misconduct and assault, particularly in the workplace, have dominated the news cycle. These stories continue every day. Stories that don’t make the front page. And they are from every industry, including our own.

The endlessly smart and perceptive women joining our panel each have their own story. They come from different backgrounds. They attack this issue in different ways. They are all affected. We are all affected.

PANELISTS
Hannah Logan: Hannah Logan is a Canadian travel writer and blogger who has written for Fodor's Travel, World Nomads, Livestrong, Good Housekeeping, Intrepid Travel, Hostelworld, and more. She secretly aspires to be just like Indiana Jones and her adventures to date have taken her to 45 countries across 4 continents. You can keep up with her (mis)adventures on her travel blog, Eat Sleep Breathe Travel, where she shares her stories and tips as a female traveller.

Justine Abigail Yu: Justine Abigail Yu is a communications and marketing strategist for the social impact space and has worked with organizations operating in North America, Central America, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. She is currently the Communications and Marketing Director for Operation Groundswell, a non-profit organization that facilitates educational programs on social justice issues around the globe. She has also recently launched Living Hyphen, an intimate journal that explores the experiences of hyphenated Canadians and examines what it means to be part of a diaspora. Her mission is to stir the conscience and spur social change.

Oneika Raymond: Media personality and travel journalist Oneika Raymond is the host of two Travel Channel series (“Big City, Little Budget” and “One Bag and You’re Out”) and is a travel expert on CTV Canada’s “Your Morning”. A true travel junkie, her adventures have taken her to over 100 countries. Oneika’s also the voice behind "Oneika the Traveller", an award-winning travel blog dedicated to inspiring women and people of color to see the world. She's written for and been profiled by publications such as the BBC, Condé Nast Traveler, The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic Traveler, Lonely Planet, BuzzFeed, and CNN.

MODERATOR
Ariel Goldberg: Ariel Goldberg is a queer, mixed-race writer, activist, survivor, traveler, consultant, and sometimes-poet based in Brooklyn, New York. She is the Creative Director for the Women in Travel Summit and the Deputy Digital Director for Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest legal organization serving LGBTQ people and people living with HIV in the United States. Her passion is for communication and expression, and she is fascinated by the ways in which storytelling manifests in art and in our hyperconnected world. Previously a content strategist with Federated Media Publishing and an editorial director at Wanderful, she has worked, edited, and traveled across the globe. You can find her around the web tweeting and writing on survival, queerness, fat acceptance, travel, and more.

We know this will be a challenging, thought-provoking, and emotional panel, but we have so much confidence in the women leading this conversation to use it for social good, both within the WITS community and in the greater travel space.
